RYA navigation and seamanship theory courses are designed to help you unravel the mysteries of navigation, pilotage, passage planning and meteorology.
Our courses, delivered by Navathome an RYA Recognised Training Centre spcialising in online training, meet the full requirements of the RYA syllabus. They are great as stand alone courses, but our aim is to complement our practical training courses. Click Here To Sample The Course Material. Learning with Causeway Power and Sail
With traditional classroom learning most courses will be taught over 40 hours This by the way is the RYA minimum recommended delivery time. However, not everyone can set aside one evening per week for 20 weeks plus the associated travel and home-work required or 5 intensive 8 hour days spent in a classroom.
Causeway Power and Sail offers you the opportunity through on-line learning to work with stimulating materials at your own learning pace. You may work as quickly as you like during a period of up to 6 months to complete the course. If you fail to complete the course within this period an extended period may be purchased. Two exam papers must be undertaken for the Day Skipper course; three for the Yachtmaster and one for the YM Ocean. At all times we’ll endeavour to answer your specific learning difficulties by e-mail or by Skype within 24 hours.
Day Skipper theory course includes RYA course notes, practice navigation charts, the RYA plotter simulator (PC version), the RYA Day Skipper Theory book for revision after your course and access to the Navathome online Day Skipper course.
Coastal Yachtmaster includes the RYA course pack with course notes, practice charts, the RYA coastal theory book, the RYA plotter simulator and access to the Navathome online coastal Yachtmaster course.
Ocean Yachtmaster theory course includes the RYA combined question paper and almanac and the connection to the Navathome online Ocean Yachtmaster theory course.

- On line exam in your own home. Must be invigilated if the certificate is to be used commercially.

Essential Navigation and Seamanship offers a great introduction to navigation and safety awareness for new skippers or crew who want to understand what’s going on right from the start. It’s for anyone interested in sailing, motor boating, sea angling or diving, and works well in complementing our on-the-water training, such as the Powerboat Level 2, Start Yachting and Helmsman courses.
It’s a highly informative course during which you will find lots of opportunities for you to put your new found knowledge into practice. If you decide to take the course online, you will find many interactive exercises to help reinforce the information and lots of chances to try out what you’ve learned.
Course topics include: Charts and Publications, Safety, Engine checks, Buoyage, Tidal awareness, Visual and Electronic Navigation, Pilotage, Rules of the Road, Anchoring, Weather Forecasts, Passage Planning
On Board in conjunction with our practical Competent Crew Courses – Price £65
A comprehensive introduction to cruising for inexperienced skippers extending well beyond the basics of navigation and seamanship.
This course equips you with enough knowledge to navigate around familiar waters by day. A basic knowledge of lights is also included to introduce you to night cruising.
In conjunction with the UK Hydrographic Office RYA developed a chart plotter specifically for use on training courses, giving you a realistic insight into electronic navigation. Use of this plotter is an integral part of the course.
Course topics include:
the basics of seamanship
* the essentials of coastal navigation and pilotage
* electronic charts
* position fixing
* plotting a course to steer
* weather forecasting and meteorology
* collision regulations
* construction, parts and equipment of a cruising boat
* emergency and safety procedures including distress calls,use of flares, safety harnesses, lifejackets and liferafts
Advanced training for more experienced skippers building on the Day Skipper course.
This course equips you to navigate safely on coastal and offshore passages. Following on a brief revision of the basics it then moves on to advanced navigation techniques.
This course will take your theory knowledge to the standard required for the Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster Offshore practical exams, concentrating on advanced navigation and meteorology skills.
As with the Day Skipper shorebased course, the RYA’s specially designed chart plotter software will be used during the course to give you a realistic taste of modern electronic navigation.
Three exam papers will be taken.

Yachtmaster Ocean £295
Unravel the mysteries of astro navigation, using a sextant, ocean passage making, worldwide meteorology and electronic navigation aids. This course is for those aspiring to blue water cruising and is ideal for holders of the Yachtmaster Offshore certificate who are preparing for their first ocean passage.
Topics covered include:
* The earth and the celestial sphere
* Practical guide to use and care of sextant at sea
* Meridian altitudes
* Sun, star and other sights
* Ocean passage planning
Prior to the course your navigation skills should be at the standard of the Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Offshore shorebased course. If you are working towards your Yachtmaster Ocean Certificate of Competence, completion of this shorebased course exempts you from the written exam.
